Difference between refractory and heat insulating material
High temperature resistant materials include refractory materials and heat insulation
materials, generally high heat materials will not play the role as heat resistant refractory,
such as high heat sealing ceramic fiber blanket. Refractory materials can directly contact
with flame, insulation materials generally do not directly contact the flame, and heat insulating
materials are norganic compounds, but also polymer materials.
Refractory materials usually refers to the ability to withstand temperatures above 1580 ℃
inorganic materials. They are the construction materials of kilns, combustion chambers and
other building materials requiring high temperatures. General made of quartz sand, clay,
magnesite, dolomite and other raw materials , such as refractory cement, magnesium bricks
and so on. Broadly speaking, inorganic refractory,heat insulation material is the high hardness,
good brittleness, good chemical corrosion resistance, and the melting point is more than 1500.
Insulation material is generally 300-1400 ℃ of organic or inorganic materials, thermal insulation
polymer can be used as high temperature resistant film insulation materials, high temperature
resistant fiber ceramic fiber blankets, high temperature resistant coatings, high temperature
resistant adhesives,etc. In accordance with the time of high temperature,called classificate high
temperature (maximum temperature) and a longer period of high temperature (working
temperature). The highest temperature is the temperature that the material can be reached in
an instant, and the working temperature is the material can be a long time working temperature.
Ablative materials are also high temperature resistant materials. For example, 300 to 600 ° C,
in the air,it can maintain its mechanical strength, chemical resistance and so on. Mainly divided
into metal and non-metallic compounds and non-metallic compounds two categories. The former
such as tungsten, molybdenum, tantalum, niobium, vanadium, chromium, titanium, zirconium
and other refractory metals and rare earth metal borides, carbides, nitrides, silicides, phosphides
and sulfides; the latter such as boron carbide, Silicon nitride, boron nitride, silicon nitride, boron
phosphide, silicon nitride,boron phosphide ,silion phosphate. The later has very important use,
can be used for high temperature refractory materials (such as abrasive,mold,nozzle, high
structural thermocouple and thermal insulation materials (casing) as structural elements,
engineering materials,electric heating element),electrical materials(such as high-temperature
thermoelectric (such as high-temperature thermocouple), ignition electrode), also used as
chemical corrosion resistant materials and hard materials etc.
Insulation materials and refractory materials should not be confused, but generally with the
use of general insulation material has the function of sealing insulation anti-corrosion, such as
ceramic fiber blankets, with refractory material can reduce the heat conductuion and loss.
